{"id":42,"date":"2015-04-17T11:33:35","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T11:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freezeassociates.com\/?p=42"},"modified":"2015-04-17T11:33:35","modified_gmt":"2015-04-17T11:33:35","slug":"introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/freezeassociates.com\/?p=42","title":{"rendered":"Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both Value Engineering\/Value Analysis (VE\/VA) and Lean Manufacturing efforts are all about saving you money and improving the value of whatever it is you do or produce.\u00a0 Using the well known Value formula, Value = Function\/Cost, the goal is obviously to\u00a0reduce cost\u00a0(the denominator)\u00a0<em>and <\/em>\u00a0increase quality and performance (the numerator).<\/p>\n<p>A typical VE\/VA project will yield, on average, 5%-25% immediate cost reduction.\u00a0 The point in the product development and manufacturing cycle at which the study is done defines the difference between VE and VA.\u00a0\u00a0Value Analysis studies focus on existing products and\/or manufacturing processes.<\/p>\n<p>Because we know that up to 80% of the total product cost is locked in once the design is finalized, Value Engineering studies,\u00a0done before capital expenditure, give the biggest bang for the buck.\u00a0\u00a0Preventing unnecessary costs early on by designing for manufacturing and assembly obviously gives C-Level Execs more options.\u00a0 Of course, every VE\/VA study begins with analysis of the current design and processes.<\/p>\n<p>A successful VE\/VA study\u00a0requires engineering, purchasing and manufacturing to work closely together.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve often been told that\u00a0those relationships were permanently improved as a result of\u00a0our workshops. We not sure how to quantify that, but we are<em> very <\/em>sure it&#8217;s valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Lean Manufacturing is a management philosophy derived mostly from the <a title=\"Toyota Production System\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyota_Production_System\">Toyota Production System<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0led to Toyota&#8217;s growth to the\u00a0world&#8217;s largest automaker.<\/p>\n<p>Lean Manufacturing, Lean Production, Lean Enterprise or\u00a0simply &#8220;Lean&#8221;\u00a0is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Working from the perspective of the customer that consumes a product or service, &#8220;value&#8221; is defined as any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.
